Ban front page political advertising in newspapers during the short general election campaign.
Why is this important?
These ads are an affront to democracy. In 2015 the Conservative Party bought wraparound front page adverts in newspapers in key marginal seats, including the Lancaster Guardian, Lincolnshire Echo, Eastbourne Herald and Hastings & St Leonards Observer. This undoubtedly influenced the election result. These ads were designed to look like editorial so it appeared that the newspapers were endorsing the political party. This petition is aimed at all political parties and not just the Conservatives. This advertising must stop. It is undemocratic and a threat to the integrity of the press.
