Breast screening to be lowered from age 50 to age 25 in the UK 🇬🇧

“Breast cancer doesn’t wait for age and neither should screening.”
I am calling for:

  1. Annual breast cancer screening for women aged 25-49.
Women in their mid 20s, 30s and 40s should be offered a yearly breast screening appointment so cancer can be detected earlier.

  2. Earlier access to diagnostic testing.
When younger women report symptoms, they should receive fast access to scans and specialist assessment without being dismissed because of their age.

  3. Better awareness among healthcare professionals and the public.
Breast cancer in younger women is real and rising. Education and awareness campaigns should reflect this.

  4. Investment in research on breast cancer in younger women.
We need better understanding of why more young women are being diagnosed and how to detect and treat it earlier.

Breast cancer is affecting more and more younger women. I am 38 and living with breast cancer, and through this experience I have met many women in their mid 20s 30s and 40s who are also going through this disease. Too often, their cancers are found late because routine screening is not offered to them.

Early detection saves lives. Younger women deserve the same chance of early diagnosis as older women.

The Scottish Government and the UK Government have the power to change this. It is time to act.

Why is this important?

The Scottish Government and the UK Government must take action to protect younger women.

I was healthy. I had a good career, a family, and a full life ahead of me. Breast cancer was the last thing I ever expected.

At 38, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Breast cancer can be a silent killer. Like many women in their mid 20s, 30s and 40s, I believed screening was something that happened later in life. But cancer doesn’t wait for a certain age.

Since my diagnosis, I have met many other younger women facing the same reality — mothers, daughters, professionals, women planning their futures. Many of them were told they were too young for breast cancer. Many were not picked up through screening.

By the time cancer is found in younger women, it is often more advanced and harder to treat.

I am sharing my story because earlier screening could save lives. Women in their mid 20s, 30s and 40s deserve the chance of earlier detection.

It’s time for the Scottish Government to act and introduce annual breast screening for younger women.

How it will be delivered

Campaign Plan: Raise awareness and gather support for annual breast cancer screening for women aged 25-49. Share personal stories, engage communities, and involve MSPs and MPs to push for policy change. Deliver the petition to the Scottish and UK Governments to give younger women a real chance of early detection and better outcomes.
