Call for an independent investigation into the recent VAR controversy in the Premier League

We, the undersigned, express our deep concern and disappointment over the recent VAR incident in the Premier League match between Liverpool and Tottenham on the 30th September 2023. The handling of an erroneous offside call that led to the disallowing of a goal has raised serious questions about the competence and integrity of those entrusted to ensure fair play in one of the world's most watched sporting leagues.

It is just one of a number of controversial, and inexplicable, VAR errors over recent seasons. We have not yet seen a radical overhaul of the system that would introduce confidence.

Given the severity of the mistake, and the broad implications it has for the sport we love, we urgently call for a comprehensive and independent investigation into this incident. This inquiry should be led by a third-party organisation with no affiliations to the Premier League, the Football Association, or any involved football clubs.

Key Aspects for Investigation:

1. Access to and analysis of VAR system logs for the match in question to examine how the technology was deployed or not deployed as the case may be.

2. Complete disclosure of all communications between the on-field referees, VAR officials, and any other parties involved during the time of the incident.

3. Scrutiny of the protocols followed by VAR officials and identification of any discrepancies between standard operating procedures and actions taken.

4. Transparent reporting on the outcome of the investigation, including any potential disciplinary actions against those found to be at fault.

5. Recommendations for procedural changes to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

In a sport where every decision can drastically impact not just the outcome of a match but an entire season, it is imperative that we uphold the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and integrity. Only through an independent, thorough investigation can we begin to rebuild public trust and ensure the credibility of football in the United Kingdom.

We await your prompt action on this critical issue.

Sincerely,

Why is this important?

The integrity of football rests on the cornerstone of fair play and unbiased decision-making. Recently, however, that integrity has been put into question due to a glaring VAR error in a pivotal Premier League match between Liverpool and their opponents. This isn't just a mistake; it's a stain on the reputation of football, casting doubts over whether competitions are truly fair or marred by incompetence, or worse, corruption.

Imagine your favourite team is battling it out for the league title, only for a blatant refereeing mistake to cost you crucial points. It's a scenario none of us want to entertain, but one that is increasingly plausible if we don't demand transparency and accountability now. This petition isn't just for Liverpool fans; it's for every fan of football who believes in the sport's capacity to inspire, unite, and thrill us in equal measure. If we don't act now, who's to say your team won't be next?
