Call on the UK government to reduce gentrification's impact on our communities

We call on the UK government, devolved administrations, and local authorities to:
Protect and Expand Social and Truly Affordable Housing
Protect and Expand Social and Truly Affordable Housing
- End the loss of social housing by reforming the Right to Buy policy and ensuring every social home sold or demolished is replaced like-for-like with a new social rent property.
- Mandate that at least 50% of homes in all new large developments are genuinely affordable at social rent.
- Halt estate demolitions and prioritise refurbishment and community-led regeneration over displacement.
Empower Local Communities and Traders
- Guarantee meaningful resident and trader participation in all regeneration and planning decisions, including binding ballots and independent oversight.
- Protect independent businesses and markets by capping rent increases for traders and requiring affordable commercial space in all major redevelopments.
Stop Displacement and Social Cleansing
- Introduce rent controls to cap annual rent increases and prevent exclusionary displacement of existing residents.
- Guarantee secure tenancies and abolish Section 21 “no fault” evictions by passing and strengthening the Renters’ Rights Bill.
Reform Planning and Housing Policy
- Strengthen planning rules to prevent “viability loopholes” that allow developers to reduce affordable housing quotas.
- Require transparent, public reporting on the social impact of all major regeneration schemes.
Why is this important?
Gentrification is driving thousands of families, key workers, and minority communities out of their homes, eroding the fabric of our cities. We demand a new approach that puts people before profit, protects our diverse communities, and guarantees the right to remain for all.
