Cancel the planned East-West railway from Oxford to Cambridge

Cancel the planned East-West railway from Oxford to Cambridge. Spend the £4 billion instead in other parts of the UK where improved infrastructure and job opportunities are needed more urgently.

Why is this important?

The proposed East-West railway will cost an estimated £4 billion above any upgrades of lines from Oxford to Bedford, cause major environmental harm and divide communities. As we rebuild after the pandemic, with national debt at historic levels, the last thing taxpayers’ money should be used for is a mini HS2 in SE England when other areas are crying out for investment.

No clear need has been established for it in passenger numbers, particularly in light of the shift towards remote working. The use of diesel trains and extensive raised viaducts will create unjustifiable levels of air, land and noise pollution.

The harm caused by the proposed line will not be outweighed by the benefits of improving transport in this prosperous region, between two cities that already have well-established links. Spend the £4 billion instead in other parts of the UK where improved infrastructure and job opportunities are needed more urgently.
