To: George Osborne and HM Government

Cap tax allowances on domestic borrowing at £26,000 (comparable with the benefits cap).

This campaign has ended.

The austerity programme seeks to reduce Government expenditure by limiting the size of its Social Security budget, but it neglects savings that can be made in adjacent areas. Notable amongst these is the tax allowance on borrowing, the chief beneficiaries of which are the better off and rich citizens who can afford to borrow. The austerity programme includes a general cap on social security payments of £26,000 per family; why not cap tax allowances too?
We call on George Osborne to demonstrate that “we are all in this together” by applying a cap on tax allowance to be fixed at £26,000 of borrowing comparable to the cap per family on social security payments.

Why is this important?

It would share the load of austerity more equitably, showing that we are truly "all in this together". I do not believe that most British electors are only interested in their personal selfish interests and careless of the obvious fact that the poor are being required to bear all the load of austerity. Many say they would willingly pay more tax if the result would benefit the NHS. This campaign would invite people of goodwill to show solidarity as a nation in a more general way. To suggest a cap on tax allowances exactly comparable with the cap (per family) on social security payments would dramatise the obvious justice of the proposed policy. It would also prod the consciences of those who are inclined to be selfish. A secondary target would be to attract the attention of politicians and political parties to consider making this into policy whether or not it wins a mass following.
