Days of pay lost over bus timetables and bus services in North Cornwall

Please take action now to:
Enhance bus timings to better support work-related travel in your communities.
Collaborate with companies to enhance bus schedules.
Ensure that the bus service caters to individuals on low incomes, residing in remote areas, and seeking access to training opportunities for personal development.
Explore ways to make local buses safe environments for women and vulnerable individuals during their travels.

Why is this important?

North Cornwall is predominantly rural, linked by narrow winding roads. With the older population emerging from the pandemic into a transformed world, changes in bus services, timetables, and schedules have impacted the community. Accessing NHS appointments, commuting to work, and attending social gatherings have become challenging for residents.

Go Cornwall Bus will be offering adults across England single fares capped at £2 on bus journeys from January. The offer is funded through a £60 million scheme under the Government’s “Help for Households” program to help the public with cost-of-living pressures over the winter.

Today I have spent some time and a bit of money on a Neighbourhood Watch Pack to hand out to residents. The bus stop has been vandalised, and there are reports of young people being rude to the service users. Empowering the residents to format a collective and work together on.

Meeting with Richard Stevens, Managing Director

Go South West, our chat was informative and hopefully supportive of what needs to be achieved to keep our bus service and public transport healthy. Richard was interested to read what is happening to his customers and their concerns. The pandemic and high interested rises are having a big impact on running a transport service, through the high cost of fuel, higher cost of repairs, and the future withdrawal of government funding over the year are all having an impact. The government has also announced the withdrawal of free bus passes for pensioners.
*Bus services have lost 20% of adult passengers
*Increased younger bus passengers by 14%
