Defend Private Tenants in Tower Hamlets
We demand that the Council use their powers for:
•Cheap housing for all - the average rent should be £500 per month for a 3 bedroom home
•Rent Controls - Private rents capped and enforced by the Council
•Council to licence Private landlords - A charter of Tenants Rights for security of tenure, proper repairs & a not for profit lettings agency
•Build 2,000 Council homes a year with priority for those in urgent housing need and those on Tower Hamlets waiting list - Public Ownership of empty private housing
•Introduce a £10 per hour minimum wage in Tower Hamlets
•Council to enforce accountability of all Housing Associations to their tenants to ensure decent standards, rent caps etc
•Bring Tower Hamlets Homes back under the council: - improve maintenance, repairs and estate-based services - no privatisation
•Abolition of Bedroom Tax & Benefits Caps: Tower Hamlets Council must refuse to evict.

Why is this important?
Tower Hamlets has the fourth most expensive private rents in the country. But if you live here, you live amongst one of the poorest populations in the UK. The cost of housing is forcing working class people out of the borough. Landlords - including so-called social Landlords - are looking to make a fast buck, some have resorted to driving out existing tenants. We pledge to defend tenants against eviction.
Tower Hamlets' housing crisis continues with 20,000 on the council waiting list 8,000 of whom live in accommodation unfit for habitation. This is forcing many, particularly young people, out of the borough.
