Don't cut BBC Jazz Now!

Don't cut BBC Jazz Now!

Stop the planned cut of BBC R3 Jazz Now.

Why is this important?

Jazz Now is a vital outlet for contemporary jazz with an edge from experimental to free jazz, and free improvisation. It is the ONLY dedicated place on the BBC that plays and promotes these musics. Plus it provides emerging artists with a platform to share their music via the BBC Introducing uploader. With Jazz already marginalised on the BBC this programme needs to be saved for the curious listeners of improvisation! To cut Jazz Now will be damaging for both artists and fans if these cherished non mainstream musics, reduce diversity on Radio3, and be a betrayal of the BBC’s founding Reithian principles to inform, educate, and entertain!

Reasons for signing

  • This is the only programme on the BBC dedicated to modern jazz. It doesn't always get it right and the current presenters can be irritating, but it is a platform that can be improved and not simply driven away.
  • All types of good music should be being broadcast and accessible to everyone. Diversity is a good thing and this particular genre of creativity should be encouraged and not lost to young music lovers. Jazz is an important part of musical development and encourages improvisation and therefore open, spontaneous creativity.
  • The BBC should be doing all it can to support modern jazz.
