Make Bath a 20mph City

We want what London Road has on every street where people live, work and play.
We request the implementation of 20mph limits across all of the remaining 30mph roads in Bath (just 8 miles of 159 in Bath) by the end of 2027. The routes are:

We want a street environment where crashes are less likely to happen and less likely to cause injury. 20mph has been proven repeatedly to help deliver that.

The Bath 20mph City website is here. Let's make it a reality!

Why is this important?

Most people already personally know someone killed or injured in a road crash.

20mph is not a silver bullet- it is a basic plank of road safety just like people wearing seatbelts in cars. It is proven to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes.

Speed limits need to be judged not only in the context of what is safe, but also what makes for a liveable city in terms of noise, air pollution, ease of crossing roads, pleasantness of being on the pavements and so on.

The remaining 30mph roads are largely single carriageways with homes and businesses each side, schools on or very near them and often in busy pedestrian areas. For example:

- In busy pedestrian areas, adjacent to schools and student halls along the Lower Bristol Road (A36)
- Along Bear Flat High Street (Wellsway A367)
- In Southern Bath directly outside the following schools:

  • Roundhill Primary School
  • Bath Community Academy site
  • St Philip’s Primary School
  • St Martin’s Primary School
  • Threeways School
  • Monkton Combe Prep School
  • Ralph Allen School
  • Prior Park College
  • St Gregory’s College

You can view a map here to view what is left to do to create a 20mph city.

We will look back on 30mph in urban areas just like indoor smoking, and be shocked at how long we tolerated the prioritising of speed over safety.

Enough is enough.

The Somer Valley Links team have now announced a very modest stretch of 20mph. Better than nothing, but our demand for 20mph for all of Bath stands.

More 20mph in Saltford. Every town and village in BANES is demanding safe speeds. Bath deserves the same.

Data shows BANES is one of the most progressive authorities when it comes to rolling out safe urban limits of 20mph. This is testament to the work of other going back over a decade.

All we say is: finish the job!
