Fix the Bath Sevendials Shared Space Scheme and install a wide Zebra crossing

We want the council to install a wide Zebra crossing at the Monmouth Street/Westgate Buildings corner in the heart of the Sevendials scheme.

This can be funded from the Cycle City Ambition Grant moneys of the original scheme as there was an underspend of around £240,000.

Why is this important?

We want the council to recognise that creating a shared space scheme on a major through road is not working. Expert design advice explicitly recommends that shared space is not built on a through road.

The installation of a wide Zebra crossing on Monmouth Street/Westgate Buildings would redefine the space to have pedestrian priority and provide a safer environment for all vulnerable road users.

It is quite clear from the number of near misses and general uncomfortable nature of the space that motorised vehicles feel they can barge through the space and be extremely aggressive.

This remedy would be very cheap to implement and money from the underspend from Cycle City Ambition Grant Sevendials scheme should be made available to fix this glaring design mistake.

It is ironic that the Zebra crossing on James St West outside the Odeon is a more comfortable and safe place to cross than Monmouth Street in the heart of the Sevendials Space.

I hate emotive statements but I think this needs highlighting as an issue:
