For a regulation of emergency sirens

There currently is no legal limit to the decibels emitted by sirens of emergency vehicles. Over the past couple of decades, these have become so loud that they are deafening for individuals who are nearby. Their wailing tone causes distress and annoyance hundreds of meters around them, deep inside people’s homes, where they do not need to be heard. They cause damage to the hearing and the mental health of many of us. They are used so frequently, and for such lengths of time, that their use has become counter-productive. Sirens should be directed only in front of the emergency vehicles, rather than above and around them. There should be a legal limit to how loud they can be and how long they can be used for at any one time.

Why is this important?

It has become an important matter of public health to change these sirens so that they get heard only by those they are meant to warn. Such is the distress they cause that some of the people most affected move out to different towns or neighbourhoods, when they can afford such a move. Please have a look at some of the testimonies and suggestions in the Talk London Forum:

I chose to write to you because you are a senior MP in the Heath and Social Care Committee of the House of Commons, as well as a former Lord Mayor of a big city. If you feel that this petition should be sent to a different lawmaker or member of the Government, please let me know. Many thanks!
