Glasgow Deserves Better

Ensure all community, sports and library venues in Glasgow reopen as restrictions lift.
Ensure that all services such as Free access to Literature and Internet services, McMillan Cancer Support, Citizens Advice Services, Play work, Youth work, adult learning and ESOL classes remain available to the people of Glasgow in their local facilities.
Ensure that sports provision is available to all local sports clubs and not to those that can afford it or a select few participating in the Community Empowerment Projects.
Glasgow remembers what happened at the Chirnsyde Community Initiative.
Also make a commitment that no member of Glasgow Life staff nor the Glasgow City Council "family" will lose their post or be forced to relocate due to People Make Glasgow Communities initiative.

Why is this important?

Glasgow Life the Arm's Length Organisation of Glasgow City Council has currently opened 91 of 171 venues it runs on behalf of Glasgow City Council. 61 additional venues are “not scheduled for reopening”. These facilities service our most deprived communities and are a vital lifeline for sport, recreation, learning and cultural opportunities for the citizens of Glasgow. Furthermore, Glasgow Life have not consulted with residents in the areas affected by these closures.

Covid-19 caused the closure of all venues in the city however Glasgow Life claim a funding deficit prevents the re-opening of all venues. Too slash, hack and decimate services in this manner when we are trying to recover from a pandemic is surely a dereliction of duty and flies in the face of their charitable aims and objectives. This decision compounds a decade of austerity with the poorest communities bearing the brunt once more.

Glasgow Life’s Director of Finance confirmed that rumours of up to 700 full time equivalent posts could be lost at a meeting attended by trade unions. We believe this figure could be higher. Our members have already faced intimidating messages from management regarding re-deployment and job security.

Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council views the citizens of Glasgow as customers. Evidenced clearly by the fact Glasgow Club began recharging members full price despite a vastly reduced service. We maintain that Glasgow Life is a SERVICE provided to the people of Glasgow for the people of Glasgow, this is an important distinction to make. Sadly this seems to have been forgotten.

Sign our petition and take a stand against these closures; and save jobs. Glasgow is not Miles Better; Glasgow Deserves Miles Better!
