Government must write off unsecured debts after 6 years
Poverty is a hard reality of life and being in debt is no crime. Unfortunately, if you have an unsecured debt and are struggling to repay in these challenging times, that debt will stay locked around your wrists like a pair of handcuffs for years and years. Your creditors will sell on your debts to another creditor and all of them make a profit on it. They will harass you again and again. They will put you under massive pressure with threatening letters, constant texting, phone calls, and bailiffs knocking on your front door. They will torture you emotionally causing stress, anxiety and pain, just when you are at breaking point. Despite the creditors declaring your debt as lost and receiving tax relief, still, they chase you for the debts. They will do everything in their power to get their money. If you want to get debt-free by declaring bankruptcy or insolvency then the very roof above your head, the car that takes you to work, shopping, hospital, the children to school, etc. and your essentials will be considered as assets - to be taken away by the creditors!!! When you declare bankruptcy you will be treated like a criminal.This will destroy your credit rating e.g. renting a flat, no more shopping on credit, even getting a new job!!! You know how hard that will be in today's society.
A small business owner invests their savings in their business i.e. they pay for stock, rent, electricity, staff wages, etc. but if the business fails the owner loses everything with no protection for their investment. Why? Because they have taken a business risk!!! Yet your creditor also takes a business risk by giving you a loan, and sadly, for reasons beyond your control, you could not repay the loan. So, how on earth can they be allowed to harass you indefinitely causing you anxiety, depression, fear and stress. They threaten you in so many ways.
It is time to stop this injustice. It is time for change, especially during these uncertain times.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
If your unsecured debt cannot be repaid within 6 years it should be automatically written off. This is reasonable. This is right. This is fair.
Government must act NOW to stop this injustice, to stop people suffering in this way and end this this life sentence. By signing this petition we can help each other in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Now, more than ever we must do this. Even if this does not affect you now, one day you might be in this situation. You never know. In these dark and challenging times your job, your livelihood, your very survival are at huge risk if we don't change this cruel system that is always on the side of the creditors.
