Halt the unjust sanctioning of benefits and universal credit

Unemployment benefits and universal credits are crucial lifelines for many in the United Kingdom, particularly single-parent families who often bear the brunt of an uneven economy. These individuals are regularly subjected to benefits sanctions by Job Centre coaches for reasons that can be seen as trivial or harshly punitive. As a result, families, even including a single mother with her baby, are left without financial support simply for missing an appointment, a situation that could be out of their control.

These sanctions are not only counterproductive, but present an insurmountable hardship for the people most in need. This is further exemplified by a report by the UK Government itself, which found that benefit sanctions can lead to food bank usage, indebtedness, and mental health problems (UK Gov, Department of Work and Pensions Report).

Our demands are straightforward. We are asking the UK Government to critically reassess the sanctioning process for benefits and universal credits and work towards formulating a more compassionate system that takes into account the genuine difficulties faced by citizens.

We urge you to join us in calling for this significant change towards a more empathetic and effective welfare system. Please sign this petition, and let's bring this cruel practice to an end.

Why is this important?

These sanctions are cruel and leaving single parents and people to suffer , these are bullying tactics by the government in hopes for people to work , millions of people signed on during COVID that never claimed benefits before , so you can imaging having no money bills to pay and needing food , the government can not solve the work problem so they are using bullying tactics, problem is people are getting sanctioned for stupid things , these actions are cruel and leaving people in dyer situations especially single parents , this needs to stop
