Upper Tooting LTN

Instead of piecemeal road closures that simply push traffic on to the next residential street, we'd like the Council to agree to work with ALL local residents to create a Low Traffic Neighbourhood for the area bounded naturally by Tooting Common in the south, the railway in the north, and by the main roads (B242 and A24) to the east and west.

We want to discuss the best options for the LTN with the Council Planners, to find a solution that is fair to all roads.

We want:

1.To create a low carbon zone that reduces the dangerously high volume of through-traffic with the strategic use of one-way systems, barriers and/or no-entry signs at key ‘rat run’ points.
2. To improve the area for walkers and cyclists as well as users of the Common.
3. A solution that is fair to all residents and does not sacrifice some roads in favour of others.

Read about LTNs here. https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/media/3844/lcc021-low-traffic-neighbourhoods-detail-v9.pdf

Why is this important?

This area is increasingly used as a rat run by traffic from outside the area. Huge volumes of traffic are crossing a residential area, causing air and noise pollution that affects the health of everyone, including children attending a nursery school. We want to reclaim the streets for local people, to make it easier to walk and cycle, and to improve the Common for all.

We would also encourage the Council to create LTN's in neighbouring areas, and to look to reduce traffic on residential roads throughout our borough.

Why now?
Elmfield and Oakmead Roads are already blocked. These barriers make things better for their area, but worse for everyone else at the Southern end of the estate.
Without your support for this wider neighbourhood scheme there is a big risk that the traffic will continue to worsen and that more isolated measures will help some roads to the detriment of others.
