Honour Peter Stringfellow on the Sheffield Walk of Fame

Friends of the late Sheffield club tycoon Peter Stringfellow are calling on council leaders to honour him in the Walk of Fame outside the town hall.

Sheffield City Council have been asked to do this previously but the call has always been rejected.

They fear that stigma over Mr Stringfellow’s association with his infamous strip clubs is behind the snub, but they want recognition for what the former General Technology College student did for Sheffield’s music industry in the 1960s and 70s.

Names on the Sheffield Walk of Fame include Gordon Banks, Sean Bean, Joe Cocker, Sebastion Coe, and Michael Vaughan.

Why is this important?

Peter Stringfellow was a Sheffield boy made good, and always proud of and never forgot his roots.

He brought music and many famous acts to the City in the 60's such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye,Tina Turner and Joe Cocker was a regular at Peter's clubs. All remained friends throughout his life. His Sheffield clubs are remembered affectionately by many.

Peter was a pupil of Sheffield Central Technical School and his school photograph is proudly displayed in the Leopold Hotel along with that of Joe Cocker.

He was a regular visitor to Sheffield, never refusing to attend charitable events such as book launches, talks at Sheffield University, concerts etc., and he made many charitable donations to organisations in the City without recognition or publicity. Peter has family still in Sheffield whom he visited regularly and supported.

He was an internationally known figure having opened clubs in New York, Miami, Beverley Hills and Paris as well as his clubs in London.

50 years after the closing of the MoJo Club and on the evening of his funeral, clubs across the City, were playing Beatles music in his memory.

Many people have objected to his current London clubs but quite honestly- these were only a small part of his almost six decade career and it's clear that he was very fondly remembered by many people in this city.

We believe Peter James Stringfellow should be celebrated as a famous and valued son of our great City - a Sheffield legend.
