In the event of a hung Parliament following the 2017 General Election
In the event of a hung parliament we petition HM the Queen to appoint an interim government of National Unity to oversee a fixed term Parliament to:
1. Review and revise the democratic electoral and voting arrangements of first past the post elections so that all citizens have a voice in how the country is governed
2. Negotiate a beneficial agreement with the EU that reflects the diverse and divergent views of the nation rather than those of a single political party
3. Institute a Constitutional Convention to make proposals for a stable, fair and practical constitutional settlement that can keep the UK united
Why is this important?
1. Our existing democratic system is no longer fit for purpose.
It is too centralised, serves political parties before people, stifles talent, innovation and new thinking, is unresponsive to the needs of local communities and promotes short-termism.
2 At a time of increasing turbulence in world affairs, the nation is clearly divided in the face of the complex issues posed by the inconclusive EU referendum which excluded the voices of young people whose future was being decide
3 No single political party is able to look after the interests of the nation as a whole
Recent elections and referendums have pulled the nation apart and previous governments have failed to invest in the regions and protect opportunties for non-partisan pubic discourse – either in the media or in the political process - causing uncertainty amongst the electorate in the face of complex decisions about the direction of our country
Note that whist Parliament is dissolved, it is not possible to petition the government and there is precedent under clause 61 of Magna Carta to petition the Queen
