Increase NHS patients access to innovative treatments for depression and bipolar disorder.

We call on the government to increase access for NHS patients to existing safe and effective innovative treatments for depression.

Why is this important?

Depression and bipolar depression can impose heavy daily costs on the quality of life of those who experience these mental illnesses, as well as their carers and the communities in which they live.

A recent government report found that 53% of those not working and on long-term sickness or benefits are reported to be due to depression and anxiety in the UK, and that the situation is getting worse since the COVID pandemic.

Because of this, there is a public imperative to treat these illnesses with the full range of available clinically effective and safe treatments.

Effective and safe innovative treatments exist but are not routinely made available to NHS patients. This is because there are too many barriers in the way of implementing them in the NHS. The barriers need to be removed and only the government can make this happen.

One person who received the innovative treatment of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation said: ‘The results were and still are miraculous and life changing after such a long period of time with unsuccessful treatment….I strongly believe that this treatment should be available in the NHS as an option to patients and families suffering like I was.’
