Introduce a minimum 5 year custodial sentence for dog theft.
Change the law to make dog theft and handling stolen dogs a seperate offence to carry a minimum custodial sentence of 5 years.
Why is this important?
Because dog thefts have risen exponentially and crimes are often carried out blatantly in broad daylight reflecting the lack of regard for punishment. Police resources do not stretch to investigating individual thefts to resolution. Although a custodial sentence is currently a possible punishment, it is rarely enforced. Introducing a 5 year minimum custodial sentence for all involved, will deter those who wish to commit this heinous crime, and reflect the severity of harm it causes to dogs and owners alike.
