IS BRITISH GAS RIPPING YOU OFF?

British Gas is not using the correct meter readings, readings I have supplied multiple times. I’ve provided them online, on a webchat, by email to their complaints department - that’s a joke! They are so overwhelmed that they sent an email saying ring this number. Impossible to get through! I emailed their Head of Communications, and their Managing Director but neither replied. They were getting the readings for my electricity from the smart meter; the gas has never worked. Finally, by recorded delivery with the date stamped photos, they revised the bill - on the day they signed for the letter. Thy continued to ignore the true readings, preferring their own ‘imaginary’ readings.

The man-hours I have spent trying to get British Gas to bill me properly is exhaustive. The stress has made me ill and my GP has written to them. They did not change their meter readings. They were also charging me for more than three times the gas they say I have used. I have now had more than a dozen bills using the same methods. All attempts to get it changed to the actual amount due have failed. How many people are being overcharged? The energy crisis is one thing, but we also have a cost-of-living crisis too. Thousands of people cannot afford their fuel bills let alone inflated ones. There is zero customer service from British Gas at a time when maybe millions of their customers are gravely concerned about their fuel and food bills.

Why is this important?

British Gas is the UK’s largest fuel supplier with around twelve million customers. Ofgem has so far passed them about 700,000 accounts when other companies had to stop trading. I can see no reason to think I am the only person they are overcharging. We are amidst an energy crisis AND a cost-of-living crisis. The poorest customers will be hit the hardest.

The poverty-stricken may well also be the least able to spot what is happening with their bills. Too many people do not check their bills. British Gas continues to use false readings when billing me. How many others? Even after recent phone conversations with someone from their complaints management team, I am unable to get them to use the actual meter readings. I am now switching suppliers. At least I have chosen a supplier who believes in customer service. I can speak with them; they listen and act professionally. From what I have found, they will only bill me for the fuel I have used.

How it will be delivered

By email.
