Labour NEC to abandon new membership rules

Labour NEC to abandon new membership rules

Stop Labour NEC charging £25 to become a supporter and preventing new members from voting in leadership election.

Why is this important?

For a political party that represents the poorest and most vulnerable in society to charge £25 to become a supporter and to have a vote in leadership election, is not only morally wrong, but diametrically opposed to its founding mission and ethos. Only the wealthy in society can afford to pay this. The Labour Party is about empowering people, and giving them a voice - whatever their economic position. The decision only excludes those people whom the Labour Party should be reaching out to.
Equally outrageous is preventing new members who have signed-up since January from taking part, despite stating on the website that they would be able to take part in voting in leadership elections. This is not democratically inclusive.
We ask the Labour Party NEC to remove these new rules, and open-up the leadership contest to everybody who holds Labour Party values.

Reasons for signing

  • I have lived in Tory Boroughs for my 69 years and I see the harm this ruling elite does to the weaker members of society. Since 13 I have been watching labour as a party and in government for not enough of those years, It's now watered it's principals down to a weak form of socialism and now a Socialist is the leader and making a good job they want him out, dead and buried. I look on with utter disbelief when I watch PMQ's. The 169 resigners appall me.
  • This decision at its core is corrupt. It was not on the (public) NEC agenda and was taken after Corbyn and supporters left. It is a clear attempt to fix what should be a democratic election. The extortionate price for a vote flies in the face of what the Labour Party is meant to represent. The utter contempt shown to over 100 thousand new members - many of whom will be on limited income - is startling. Do not disenfranchise your members and your movement.
  • This isn;t what Labour is all about. The poorest people will be excluded from this vote. Hopefully a labour friendly millionaire will offer interest free loans or gifts of £25 for those who want to vote but can't afford to.
