Last Chance to Save Whalebones

The Mayor allowed the London Borough of Barnet to give permission to the housing development on the land at Whalebones.

Ask the Mayor of London to direct the London Borough of Barnet to refuse the planning application (ref: 23/4117/FUL - https://publicaccess.barnet.gov.uk/online-applications/simpleSearchResults.do?action=firstPage) for a high-density housing development on the land at Whalebones in High Barnet.

Why is this important?

This development will cause substantial harm to Barnet for the following reasons:

  • It is totally out of character with the Wood Street Conservation Area (WSCA).
  • It is far too dense and will blur the conservation area boundary.
  • It will result in the loss of 100% of WSCA’s countryside whilst only meeting 0.76% of Barnet’s 5 yr housing targets.
  • It will harm the WSCA, historic environment and local character.
  • It will cause significant loss of green open space
  • It will result in the loss of the last remnant countryside only to create a third urban park in the WSCA.
  • It ignores Whalebones value as a natural open countryside asset, regardless of public access.
  • It ignores other optimal viable uses of the site – such as school food growing project.
  • It is not genuinely affordable housing.
  • It will cause habitat network loss and increases fragmentation.
  • It will create traffic problems and put more pressure on area of poor transport connectivity.
  • It conflicts with the Mayor’s aim of 80% of all London journeys to be completed via active travel modes by 2041.

Unfortunately, today the Mayor decided to allow the London Borough of Barnet to determine the application to develop housing on the land at Whalebones. This means that the housing development will go ahead and we will lose this precious countryside. Thank you all for your wonderful help signing, sharing and raising awareness about this important issue.
