Let Hoops and Loops (LGBT Asylum Seekers and Refugees) keep their name.
We, the undersigned, recognise Hoops and Loops as an independent group of asylum seekers and refugees, separate from Race Equality First. This name was chosen by members of the group and we consider this name critical to their identity and empowerment, and call on Race Equality First to stop obstructing their use of the name.
Why is this important?
Hoops and Loops is a support and social group for LGBT asylum seekers in South Wales, established in 2015 with DPIA, and became associated with Race Equality First in 2016. The group have established an identity under this name, and are recognised in the community. They are not formally incorporated in to Race Equality First, and having decided to no longer be affiliated with REF are being told they cannot keep their name and threatened with legal action.
This is intimidation, and is harmful to members of the group and their identity as a group.
They must be allowed to keep their name.
