Lift the Ban for Asylum Seekers

Imagine you’ve fled everything you’ve ever known, your home, your job, your community, escaping war, violence, or persecution. You arrive in a place that promises safety, and a fresh start.

But instead of rebuilding your life, you’re forced into waiting.

For minimum 12 months asylum seekers in the UK are banned from working, trapped in limbo, and forced into dependency.

It is time to lift the ban.

Many have advocated that the ban is a violation of fundamental rights. But even now, the UK still imposes some of the longest restrictions in Europe, while countries like Sweden and Portugal allow asylum seekers to work immediately

Why is this important?

This policy hurts everyone:

  • Asylum seekers are stripped of dignity—forced to rely on handouts instead of earning a living.
  • The UK economy loses out on skilled, hardworking individuals eager to contribute.
  • It fuels racism and resentment, reinforcing the false idea that asylum seekers are a burden instead of the builders, caregivers, and workers they long to be.

What message does this send? That those fleeing persecution and war are less deserving of human dignity? That the government prefers to keep people in poverty rather than allow them to contribute?

This isn’t just about policy, it’s about basic human rights.

Let asylum seekers work. Let them contribute. Let them live with dignity.
