Make leather lane a safer place to live and work

Why is this important?

Leather lane market is a busy street in central London. Due to the nature of the road, members of the public and traders alike have to use leather lane to work and commute.

However, as there is insufficient information to make drivers aware that the area is heavily pedestrianised, vehicles are constantly driving through the market often at speed.

I have witnessed stalls in leather that have been knocked over by speeding cars and vans. Fortunately nobody has been injured yet however I feel that it’s only a matter of time.

Furthermore, with the increasing number of electric cars of the road, it makes it even harder for pedestrians to be aware of oncoming vehicles making an accident inevitable.

Finally and probably most importantly, with two primary schools very close to leather lane where parents and children use the road, it highlights just how dangerous this situation is and how a few road signs could make the area much safer.

What we propose which would provide a solution the dangerous conditions regarding traffic in leather lane are two suggestions:

1. Change the times that vehicles are allowed to use leather lane. currently cars are not be allowed in leather between 10am -2pm Monday to Friday. We propose that this be changed to 8am - 4pm.

The reason for this is at 8am traders are setting up and people are commuting and this is one of the most congested times of the day. Also at 2pm, the market is still very busy and filled with vans which makes it impossible to get through as it is.

2. The second suggestion is to allocate clear road signs at both ends of all roads leading in to leather lane making it clear that there is a market in operation and it’s Operating times.

Roads to include:

•Baldwin gardens
•st cross street
•Hatton wall
•both ends of leather lane itself.

Hopefully with enough support we can convince Camden council to make the proposed changes so that leather lane market can become a safer place to live and work.
