More Public Control Over Rural City Development

We call on the UK Government to ensure that no company will be awarded status of Development Corporation - with powers to issue and enforce Compulsory Purchase orders - without a full and transparent consultation with affected residents, and then only with the agreement of a majority of those residents.

Why is this important?

This request is made - without any party political affiliation - by and on behalf of residents of 'the area East of Cambridge' which is currently the target of developers* seeking to concrete over a vast area of high-grade farmland - disrupting the lives of many thousands of people in the towns and villages between Newmarket and Haverhill for decades to come; causing massive pollution and tearing apart communities and livelihoods - all in order to build an entire city. Such a city is not only unwanted, but is not needed - plans are already in place to increase the supply of housing in and around Cambridge to cater for the area's needs. To destroy a massive area of British countryside for an experimental project of this size and scope is quite simply unacceptable. Those of us who live in this 100 square mile area - in our towns and villages, in our chosen rural landscape - are not prepared to accept the destruction of our entire way of life, with the digging up of thousands upon thousands of acres of land, and the obliteration of irreplaceable wildlife habitats, for a project which was not asked for by the area's residents, and which - if it fails to meet expectations, falls victim to underfunding or simply does not work - will leave those of us who live here with nothing but scarred lives and a scarred, destroyed landscape.

The wording of this petition takes into account that ours is not the only area of the country falling prey to attempts to deprive the country of much-needed arable land for the sake of city-building, rather than rely on the tried and tested route of the organic and sustainable growth of our cities and towns.

* Albion City Development Corporation Ltd: Incorporated on 2 October 2025 in London, this is a Private Limited Company, not a statutory body. It is associated with a "forest city" proposal, but it is not listed as having government-granted "Development Corporation" status (as of 18th March 2026). It should be noted that the naming of this company as a 'Development Corporation', despite it not having that government-awarded status, seems somewhat disingenuous, and appears to be calculated so as to present itself as something it is not.
