No Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Fishing in Channel Island waters

Bluefin tuna were previously facing extinction, under current laws, fishing the species is prohibited due to dwindling stock.
But in recent years they have returned to Channel Island waters, many sightings of which have been enjoyed by wildlife enthusiasts.

Just as this species appears to be recovering, Jersey's environment minister Deputy Steve Luce and Guernsey's economic development president Deputy Neil Inder are seeking to boost the fisheries industry by allowing charter fishing.

The species are currently protected under the Wildlife (Jersey) Law, and Guernsey law, which prohibits targeting and landing Atlantic bluefin tuna within local waters.

Why is this important?

More research needs to be done to establish:

-The reason for the return of bluefin tuna to Channel Island waters and whether warming sea temperatures have forced them to relocate here to find prey

-The true extent of current bluefin tuna stock in UK waters
