No council tax loans; make Energy Giants pay their fair share

There is no denying the government is aware its constituents are struggling. The government has seen the value of wages decrease with inflation, whilst watching the cost of living soar to record levels. All whilst giant energy companies continue to report record profiting.

It is impossible to defend big energy companies under the guise of hardship. True hardship is being felt by us, making compromises, staying in more, buying less for loved ones and children, even choosing if we eat or heat our homes. We have been struggling for too long and now must find an extra £693 for our energy bills. For an average household this will be an extra £57.75 each month from April.

Remember the term 'price cap' of £1,971 is misguiding. It is not the maximum anyone will pay, but sets the rate you pay for each unit of gas and electricity. If you use more, you will have to pay more.

Rishi Sunak's energy 'discount' plans are insulting. This is a £350 loan and all 'help' must be repaid in full. We deserve significant and drastic solutions, not temporary loans.

It is both reasonable and necessary to impose a windfall tax on big energy companies. Shell recorded profits quadrupling in the last quarter of last year; $6.4 billion (£4.7 billion), up from $393 million the year before.

A windfall tax is a short term solution and is simply the right thing to do. None of us should have to choose whether to heat our home, feed ourselves or our children.

Urgent self-sufficient energy infrastructure is required. The UK falls behind with 'green' initiatives. Investing in this technology is not only vitally needed environmentally, but provides regular and stable energy for the country. The UK would not have to rely on imports and therefore further increased energy costs in the future.

Rishi Sunak - A windfall tax is urgently needed. Implement this quickly and urgently address how energy is generated within the UK through renewable sources.

This affects all of us. Please sign and share the campaign. Thank you to those taking the time to do so, helping improve our standards of living.

Why is this important?

None of us should have to shoulder the financial burden of energy costs, whilst big energy companies are able to quadruple their profits in the last quarter of 2021, to over £4.7 billion.

We are all suffering financially. Our wages are of less value due to rapid inflation without meaningful wage increases. Services and products cost us more. If that wasn't enough we are being squeezed further by a 1.5% National Insurance tax increase, all whilst big business continue to evade meaningful taxes. We are told to shoulder the burden instead.

The government have failed to help us, providing only a temporary loan 'to get us by'. This will affect 60%, however many more will soon follow. There are no cheaper fixed deals than the price cap available, so those who currently benefit from a fixed deal will soon feel the squeeze too.
