Pension for coronavirus NHS and care worker widowers

Re-instate the NHS Injury Benefits Scheme.

The NHS Injury Benefits Scheme is a scheme that provides a pension to widows of NHS employees who have passed away due to injury or disease sustained during their work. It was wound up for new staff or for injuries or disease sustained after 2013. One of the good things about the scheme was that you didn’t have to be in the NHS Pension Scheme; though the NHS Injury Benefits Scheme was administered by the NHS Business Services authority (the NHS Pension Scheme administrators), you didn’t have to be in the Pension Scheme to benefit – you just had to be an NHS employee, who had sustained an injury, or death, caused by working for the NHS.

We call on the government to re-instate the NHS Injuries Benefit Scheme to apply to all those who die of Coronavirus in providing care, in hospitals and care settings, NHS staff and contracted staff, and all grades of staff.

In this way, we as a nation will be able to express our thanks to those staff and their families.

Please remember to sign the on-line petition when you go outside on Thursday evenings to show our appreciation in a truly meaningful and lasting way.
