To: UK government, London Mayor Sadiq Khan and the Metropolitan police

Protect our right to protest

Protect our right to protest

Don’t increase police powers to shut down non-violent protests

Why is this important?

The police are pushing the government to give them new powers to clamp down on peaceful protests. But with politics as volatile as they are right now, it’s never been more important for people to be able to stand up for what they believe in - we can’t afford to let this happen.

Throughout history, peaceful protest has helped change the world for the better. From the Suffragettes, to Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp, to recent Xtinction Rebellion protests the UK has a proud history of peaceful demonstrations for the issues we care about. Giving more power to the police to shut down protests is an attack on our democratic right to speak out about decisions that will shape our future.

Reasons for signing

  • I’ve signed this purely because I can see my country slowly being turned into a police state we’re they abuse their powers, a line has to be drawn in the sand here as we are slippy into a very dark alley when it becomes a police state, as we see around the world we’re they have very little restraint, I say NO MORE POWER INTO POLICE HANDS..
  • The right to protest is crucial in every democracy. Hold the line.
  • Not being able to peacefully protest is one step down the line to a dictatorial government
