Reduce Speeding on Riddlesdown Road
To Whom It May Concern,
We, the undersigned residents of Riddlesdown Road and Grasmere Road, Purley, call on the relevant authorities to take immediate action to reduce speeding and improve road safety in our area.
Background:
Our roads are residential, with families, children, elderly residents, and cyclists using pavements and crossing points every day. Despite the posted speed limits, speeding vehicles are a constant and growing threat. Just yesterday (1st March 2026), a car overturned on Riddlesdown Road—fortunately, no pedestrians were present at the time, or the consequences could have been far worse.
Our Concerns:
- Persistent speeding throughout the day and evenings, not limited to off-peak hours.
- Increased risk of serious accidents, as highlighted by the recent overturned vehicle incident.
- Potential danger to pedestrians, including children walking to school, cyclists, and elderly residents.
- Existing enforcement measures are insufficient to deter speeding.
We Request the Following Immediate Actions:
- Urgent mobile speed checks and installation of speed cameras (mobile or fixed) coordinated with the Metropolitan Police and local Safer Neighbourhood Team.
- Implementation of traffic-calming measures, which may include:
- Speed humps or cushions to reduce vehicle speeds
- Raised pedestrian crossings to improve visibility and safety
- Chicanes or narrowing of the carriageway to slow traffic naturally
- Enhanced signage, including speed limit reminders and warnings of children crossing
- Improved road markings to highlight pedestrian areas and crossings
- Greater awareness and communication to residents and drivers about road safety and speed limits.
- Consultation with local residents on long-term solutions to improve safety.
We, the undersigned, ask that this issue be treated as a priority and that immediate steps are taken to prevent serious accidents.
Note: Photographs and evidence of recent incidents are available to support this petition.
