Reduce the 7-Year Route to Settlement for Children Born in the UK to 3 Years

We call on the UK government to reduce the current 7-year route to settlement for children born in the UK to 3 years.

Under the existing rules, children born in the UK must live continuously in the country for seven years before they can apply for leave to remain based on their private life. This lengthy period imposes unnecessary challenges on families and children, especially those who are integrated into British society from birth.

We believe reducing this period to three years is more equitable and reflects the best interests of the child. It would:

- Ensure children have stability and security at an earlier stage of their development.
- Align immigration policy with the principle of promoting family unity and child welfare.
- Reduce the financial and emotional burden on families navigating prolonged uncertainty.

Children born and raised in the UK deserve a fair chance to integrate fully into society without unnecessary delays. This reform would better reflect their rights and contributions as future members of our community.

Please support this petition to bring about a positive change for thousands of families and children across the UK.

Why is this important?

The current 7-year route to settlement for children born in the UK is unnecessarily long and places a significant burden on families. Children born in the UK often grow up with a strong sense of belonging to British society. However, they face prolonged uncertainty, which can harm their emotional well-being, disrupt their education, and delay their ability to fully participate in society.

Reducing this period to three years would allow children to achieve stability sooner, providing them with a secure foundation to grow, learn, and thrive. It ensures their rights and best interests are prioritized, reflecting the values of fairness and compassion that underpin British society.

This issue affects not just the children and families directly involved, but also the broader community. When children are given the opportunity to integrate fully and early, it benefits society as a whole. By supporting this change, you are:

1. Promoting Equality: Every child born in the UK deserves the same opportunity to feel secure and included.
2. Strengthening Families: Families facing immigration challenges often experience stress and financial hardship, which can impact their ability to contribute to society.
3. Building a Better Future: Supporting children’s well-being and integration strengthens communities and creates a more cohesive and compassionate society.

By joining this campaign, you are standing up for fairness, family unity, and the well-being of the next generation. Together, we can push for a more just and inclusive policy that benefits everyone.
