Reduce the B1102 Speed Limit in Swaffham Prior

We, the undersigned, call on Cambridgeshire County Council Highways and Cambridgeshire Constabulary, to reduce the speed limit on the B1102 through Swaffham Prior from 40mph to 30mph and to put in place measures to enforce the revised speed limit.

Why is this important?

Swaffham Prior is the only built up area along the length of the B1102 from Stow cum Quy to Mildenhall where a 40mph limit remains. The road is heavily congested, especially at peak commuter periods, many vehicles take little notice of the 40mph speed limit leading to speeds regularly exceeding 50mph. School children wait for bus transport to the Village College, parents walk their children to school along the footpaths. We recognise the work the Swaffham Prior Parish Council have done over the years to try and secure a change, but given that no change has been achieved and the police make no attempt whatsoever to enforce the current speed limit, we demand swift action for change.

Lode achieved a speed reduction to 30mph, Stow cum Quy, a reduction to 20mph, the Swaffhams Greenway plan involves reducing the speed limit between Lode and Swaffham Bulbeck to 40mph, so it is clearly possible to achieve the required outcome, even if this requires a “buffer” zone of 40mph to 30mph at the entrances to the village.

The risks of pedestrians being hurt are real. A recent accident showered the footpath with car parts and wooden bollards which form part of existing traffic calming measures were hurled along the pavement. Had someone been walking along the pavement, they would have been maimed or killed by the flying debris. Many people have had their pets knocked down and killed, it is a matter of time before a human is seriously injured or worse still, killed.

We demand action now to reduce the speed limit to 30mph and then to enforce that new speed limit so that drivers stick to it for the safety of our community.
