Remove the Dangerous Skate Stops in Bristol City Centre

Bristol City Council has installed a large number of skate stops in Bristol City Centre. This has been done to discourage the community of skateboarders who regularly use this area in the evenings.

However, these skate stops protrude from the ground and are a serious issue for disabled people. In sunshine, they are hard to distinguish from the pavement and are also a trip hazard for people with mobility issues, spatial awareness issues, those who are blind, use mobility aids or are wheelchair users.

There will be other disabilities not listed but for whom these skate stops provide a substantial hazard and make moving through the centre of Bristol difficult, dangerous and potentially stop them accessing this part of the city at all.

Additionally, the skate board community are mostly self policing and are known to take care to avoid the Cenotaph. There are few other areas in Bristol dedicated to skate boarding.

The use of skate stops disproportionately affects disabled people as well as young people taking part in free outdoor recreation activities.

Why is this important?

Bristol should be a city for everyone, but it is full of systemic barriers. Disability is always an after thought. It should be at the forefront of decision making - which the skate stops show it is not.

Accessibility in Bristol for disabled people is access for all.
