Reopen the beds at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

UPDATE - 13/09/16

We won! The hospital released a statement confirming that the beds will re-open!

Please confirm that the beds closures made in August, 2016, are temporary and that they will all be reopened by the end of October.

Why is this important?

68 beds were closed last month, nearly 7% of capacity. Even with all the beds open, the staff at the NNUH struggle daily to admit emergencies. Fewer beds means more people stuck in ambulances outside A&E or lying on trolleys for hours, a terrible experience when you are in need of urgent treatment, especially for the elderly. It also means more cancellations for routine admissions.

The NNUH is in "financial special measures" and the accountants have arrived from London to find ways to make £17.6 million savings by next April, an impossibility without very serious damage to the hospital. The bed closures, which are described as temporary, are meant to save money by avoiding the use of agency nursing staff until this year's nursing graduates are available to take up posts.

This petition is aimed at making sure the management know their actions are being watched and to make it less likely that they will be able to quietly make the cuts permanent. We hope it will make the
the public more aware of what is going on and to object to the slashing and trashing of our NHS.

How it will be delivered

We are going to ask for a meeting with Mark Davies but will start to show our concerns over these cuts by gathering at the Hill, by the big roundabout by the entrance to the NNUH, from 7am to 11am on 15th September. Come at any time between 7 and 11. This is still going ahead.

They said they would reopen the beds!
It looks as though the NNUH will not be reopening all 68 beds by the end of October and the promise of 12th September is about to be broken. HOWEVER ON 19TH OCTOBER, THEY ANNOUNCED THAT EDGEFIELD WOULD REOPEN ON 7TH NOVEMBER, CRINGLEFORD SHORTLY AFTER. The planned protest on 24th October is therefore cancelled.
We are considering an action at the hospital, possibly when the wards have reopened, to mark the costs incurred such as the damage to staff and the specialist urology service and the loss of the service for teenagers and some beds for the Care of the Elerly team versus the savings made.

Come and join the daily protest outside the NNUH
to the end of October, from 7am to 11am
We want the public to know that the NNUH is being eroded bit by bit. The managers are doing as they are told by the accountants and management consultants.
This is what it means to be in ''financial special measures''.
Cutting the deficit is the excuse for doing what was always the plan, to give the private sector the bits they want. Plans to expand much needed services have been frozen and private companies are lining up to take the easy bits, leaving the difficult stuff for the NNUH.
What is wrong with the private sector helping out? My views are on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/Keep-Our-NHS-Public-1624124657879233/info
