To restore the Barnard Castle relief road in the County Durham Plan

Why is this important?

We've seen an increase in the number of HGVs passing through Barnard Castle. Not only does this increase noise and pollution in the town, there are concerns about pedestrian safety, and about the damage caused to the heritage of the town. For example, the Grade I listed building Market Cross is regularly damaged by HGVs using the roundabout.

The HGVs passing through often create traffic jams that affect both Barnard Castle residents and businesses. The Barnard Castle relief road is a way to facilitate continued growth in the area whilst also protecting Barnard Castle's status as a top tourist destination.

There's a strong, local desire for a relief road. Discussed for years, with traffic only getting worse, the County Durham Plan is the perfect opportunity to see this through.

We urge the Planning Inspector to listen to our local community, change course, and reinstate the the Barnard Castle relief road in the County Plan.
