Retain local government-run bus services

Remove Clause 21 of the Bus Services Bill which prohibits a local authority from forming a company for the purpose of providing a local bus service; they could not own or have a major shareholding in a bus company.

Why is this important?

Local authorities are able to provide rural bus services which would not be viable if under private ownership; they can cross subsidise them from more profitable urban services.
Local authority bus services must be an option within the Bus Services Bill.
In Nottingham, the Nottingham City Transport has invested in electic buses and hydrogen fuelled transport which is reducing air pollution in Nottingham. They are an award-winning service. The private buses are predominantly diesel.
