Call for Resident Parking Zone in residential roads adjacent to The High Street, Newmarket

Earlier in the year the powers of enforcing parking infringement, especially in the high street and surrounding roads was transferred from Suffolk Police to West Suffolk Council. This rightly so will end a free for all of people parking in nearby streets which surround the high street, Newmarket, as they go to the shops etc. However, the current parking exclusions and enforcement of these do not take in to account the residents who live along these roads. I am a resident of All Saints Road which has a single yellow line on one side and along a portion of the road has a parking bay with a max stay of 1 hour with no return after 1 hour. Whilst there is a car park on All Saints Road, the charge for a permit to park in the car park is £250 per car for the year which is an additional cost that some may not be able to afford on top of the already high cost of living. At the time of starting this petition, the All Saints road Car Park is being resurfaced and so the vehicles parked in the bay on All Saints Road are not being ticketed.

The current measures are particularly unfair to residents on these streets, especially given that people are very likely to be still working from home, furloughed or made redundant. It is therefore not practical for them to move their car every couple of hours between 8am and 6pm.

We therefore call on West Suffolk Council to review the parking situation for roads that immediately surrounding the high street in Newmarket and, where applicable, bring in, consulting with residents, a residents parking scheme that is reasonably and fairly charged.

Why is this important?

Residents will and are being unfairly ticketed by parking enforcement officers, especially given people are still working from home
