Review the Welfare State

Review the spirit and intent of the 1942 Beveridge Report that led to the implementation of the welfare state, and review its effectiveness in the light of the current Covid-19 crisis.

Why is this important?

The Beveridge Report of 1942 was conceived at a time of crisis; the Second World War was at its height, and revealed huge gaps in social welfare and health care.

The Report led directly to the creation of the Britain's most comprehensive National Health Service, accompanied by educational reform and social care, creating the welfare state that was envied throughout the world.

Time has not been kind.

The Covid-19 crisis has opened up enormous fissures in a comprehensive, inclusive and wrap-around system of care for all groups, individuals and families; it seems that the "cradle to grave" spirit and intent of Beveridge. has been lost or forgotten, and the welfare state is now in need of an urgent, comprehensive and all encomapssing reset.
