Safe streets and clean air outside Whittingham Primary

We, the undersigned, are petitioning for the installation of a range of traffic calming measures outside our school, including but not limited to; yellow lines; zig zags; temporary bollards; and traffic calming measures outside our school.

The current situation of dangerous driving and irresponsible parking poses a significant risk to the safety of our children and the entire school community. On multiple occasions there have been ‘near-miss’ instances of children being injured whilst on their way to school. Existing measures are simply not enough and without greater intervention, we fear for our children’s safety.

We are not aware of another school within the borough, or beyond, without these types of restrictions.

By signing this petition, we, alongside Whittingham Primary Academy, and United Learning as it’s trust, formally request Waltham Forest Council to take immediate action to implement significant measures and for Cllr’s in Higham Hill Ward to make them a priority.

Examples of the measure expected to address the health and safety risk posed to your young children include:
Installation of Yellow Lines & Zig Zigs: Yellow lines and zig zags will prevent vehicles from parking too close to the school entrance, ensuring clear visibility for pedestrians, improving air quality and enhancing safety.

Parking Enforcement offices at Drop off and Pick up: These individuals have the power and tools at their disposal to ensure that the interventions are adhered to. For a short time in in 2022, officers were in attendance int the morning and the rate of infractions significantly decreased.

Why is this important?

Traffic Calming Measures: Implementing speed bumps, signage, temporary bollards and other traffic calming measures will slow down vehicles, discouraging reckless driving and creating a safer environment for everyone.

"Whittingham parents & residents have raised concerns about unsafe driving, parking and idling. Despite the measures we have already put in place to keep our children safe, this problem persists. As a school we welcome the support of the Healthy Streets for Higham Hill & Lloyd Park initiative. We want to work together to create a safe environment for all our children and reduce the risk of accidents.

With yours an their support we know that any changes we can make will not only protect the lives of our pupils but also increase the number of families travelling to school sustainably by walking or cycling. This can only help to increase the already strong sense of community at Whittingham and promote cooperation and consideration between all road users.

- Miss Thompson, Principal

These measures will provide the following benefits:

Enhanced Safety: Our children will be protected from accidents and injuries caused by dangerous driving and obstructive parking.

Reduced negative impart on health: Improving poor air quality caused by idling vehicles outside the school gates at the busiest periods.

Encouraging Healthy Habits: By creating a safe environment, more families will be encouraged to choose walking or cycling as a means of transportation, promoting a healthier and environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

We kindly request your support by signing this petition to demonstrate the urgent need for these safety measures. Together, we can make a difference and ensure the safety and well-being of our children.

How it will be delivered

The petition will be presented to the Council, The Mayor and all three ward cllr's for consideration.
