Save Edinburgh’s Eye Pavilion
We are calling on the Scottish Government to honour funding for NHS Lothian’s plans for a replacement to the Princess Alexandria Eye Pavilion, with a new centre of excellence in Edinburgh. While a single centre of excellence is vital, it is also important that a central and easily accessible location is selected to ensure maximum access for patients.
Why is this important?
We believe that intervention from the Scottish Government is vital. There are 14,500 people living with sight loss in Edinburgh, and nearly 12,000 people with sight loss living across the rest of the Lothians. We can expect a further 3,000 people to be living with sight loss in Edinburgh by 2030.
We need to ensure that those living with sight loss can access services in their local area. Some are being sent to the Golden Jubilee in Clydebank. Given that driving is often not recommended or possible following an eye treatment or when living with the side effects of an eye problem, this is a journey that forces patients to navigate multiple buses and perhaps a train to access NHS services.
Failure to fund a replacement building for the leading care and specialist treatment the pavilion provides risks the quality of specialism and care currently delivered being permanently eroded.
