Save Hartlepool Greenbelt and the Skylarks
Please sign this petition calling on Secretary of State Rt Hon Sajid Javid to call in this proposed development and to conduct a public enquiry to determine if a development of this magnitude is needed and to quantify the negative environmental impact so that a properly considered decision can be made.
Why is this important?
Greenbelt should not be sacrificed to provide funding to cash strapped councils.
Hartlepool Borough Council (HBC) have approved an outline planning application (H/2014/0428) for a development including the building of 1200 new houses and a supporting £18+ million road infrastructure.
Local councillors support the development because it brings in council tax revenue after years of government cuts.
The proposed development will totally destroy over 250 acres of the greenbelt area of prime agricultural land that separates the town of Hartlepool from the nearby rural villages of Dalton Piercy and Elwick.
As a local resident, I know the area of the proposed development hosts a wide variety of wildlife including the globally endangered Skylark whose population has declined 75% since 1972 -1996 and is on the RSPB’s critical red list. The Meadow Pipit which is also endangered and on the RSPB's amber list is common in the area ,the habitat loss for all wildlife will be very considerable.

The proposed development will simply create a dormitory town for the greater Teesside area at the expense of irreplaceable local Green belt, although large areas of suitable brownfield sites exist in Teesside.
No desperately needed affordable housing for local residents will be created whatsoever by the construction of a colossal executive estate on virgin greenbelt.
