Save The Hungate Centre in Pickering North Yorkshire

The Hungate Centre was paid for by the local community back in the 1960's and was gifted to WRVS as a resource to be enjoyed by the community.
We think that since the RVS no longer wants to operate this resource - it should be returned to the community, or at the very least kept open for a further 6 month period and the community given the chance to create a new operating model so that the aims of local people over 50 years ago are honoured now and in future years.

Why is this important?

Many of the older people of the town and surrounding villages rely on the Hungate Centre as a place where they can enjoy companionship and gain a sense of belonging.
It is a well loved venue for activities and events which strengthen community cohesion and improve well-being and mental health outcomes, especially for older people.
It's continued existence plays a major role in combating loneliness and isolation in the community.
It must not be lost for the sake of corporate gain and short term profit.

Good news!
The Hungate Centre has been saved for the community!
Local charity CAVCA has taken over custodianship of the Hungate Centre from RVS.
This means that the Hungate Centre will continue to be run entirely for the benefit of the people of Pickering - exactly as intended when the Hungate Centre was built so many years ago.
It means a great deal that a LOCAL charity which is focused entirely on working in our part of North Yorkshire now has the chance to shape the future development of the Hungate Centre.
YOUR signature really did make a difference - thank you for being an important part of the campaign.
Thank you.

Time is short now, but there are two things you can do if you still wish to save this important building.
1/ Ryedale District Council are holding an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday 27th January to discuss the future of the Hungate Centre. There is an option for RDC to buy the building and rent it out to the community. PLEASE: write to your local RDC councillor ( http://democracy.ryedale.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx?bcr=1 ) before that date to let them know your view.
2/ In last week's Gazette RVS posted a small public notice ( https://www.gazetteherald.co.uk/announcements/public_notices/notice/151565.PUBLIC_NOTICE/ ) asking for local views on the buildings future. It's taken almost a year for RVS to do this but PLEASE: email [email protected] - tell her why you think the building should be saved.
We can still save the Hungate Centre. Please do help if you can.

Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition.
Musical Memories have put a bid into Pickering Town Council asking them to help us purchase the Hungate Centre and therefore save it for the benefit of the community.
If this bid is successful a new community organisation will be created to ensure that the Centre remains as a community resource for Pickering, and can reopen and welcome people as soon as pandemic conditions allow.
The Pickering Town Council meeting to discuss our application is on Monday 11th January at 7pm.
If you live in the area YOU can help by writing to, or emailing, the Town Council and making you feelings about the Hungate Centre and its future known to them.
You can email the Town Clerk Angela Dowson:
[email protected]
or email the councillors individually details here:

After many weeks and months of time-wasting and excuses RVS finally instructed a local Estate Agent and today - yes 9th December - we have the sales details! This gives us only 8 weeks to find a grand total of £155,000.
Quite a challenge of course....but we are working with a number of local organisations to try to achieve this challenging target.
There are 2 things you can do to help:
1/ Please encourage people you know to sign this petition
2/ Consider donating to our crowdfunding page
https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/save-the-hungate-centre
its an all or nothing campaign, so if we do not make the target you will be refunded
We only have until the end of January so time is short.
Thank you in advance for your help - please also tell your friends and family.
Thanks

In the midst of the current, awful Covid-19 situation there is at least a little bit of good news on this campaign...
RVS have agreed, in the first instance, to suspend the sale of the Hungate Centre for 6 months to allow the local community to come up with a rescue plan to keep the building for the use of local people.
Obviously, the Hungate Centre is currently closed for health and safety reasons.
RVS have also agreed to engage with local community representatives to establish positive dialogue as soon as is possible.
Thank you once again for signing this petition - the cause is not yet won, but also it is not yet lost either.
More updates will appear here in due course.

967 people have signed this petition so far – and 200 more who signed the paper petitions in Pickering.
Here are a couple of things you might like to tweet at them directly...
#GiveItBack #peoplebeforeprofit
1/ Will RVS return the Hungate Centre to the people of Pickering, as it was gifted to RVS back in 1969?
2/ If not will RVS keep the Hungate Centre open for at least another 6 months to enable the local community to construct a rescue plan and keep the centre open for all as it has been for over 50 years?
3/ RVS bleating about the tough funding environment – they raised £53M last year. Tell that to the older folk of Pickering who are losing their community centre.
4/ RVS get grant funding but gave back over £44K last year they could not spend - Hungate Centre costs £13K per year to run
5/ RVS reserves of over £23M – reluctant to commit approx £6.5K to keep the Hungate Centre open for 6 months
Thanks
Neil
