Save the Woodman Battersea

Dear all

We hope you are well.

We are so happy to report that as of 4.30pm this afternoon, the Woodman is now open for drinks.

They are still working on bringing us food but we are sure you will join us in celebrating this mega milestone.
Hope to see you there soon for a drink.

Best wishes
Polly and David

We are calling on the brewery, Hall and Woodhouse, to withdraw the sale of the Woodman Pub in Battersea High Street in Battersea, SW11. We ask them instead to do the right thing and negotiate a fair and decent lease so that it stands a better chance of remaining as a thriving community pub. This would be wholly in line with their values of integrity and kindness.

In the event that the site falls into the hands of property developers, we are also calling on Wandsworth Council to do everything in its power to protect the pub and prohibit any changes to use.

Why is this important?

The Woodman Pub on Battersea High Street is one of the few remaining pubs in the area. In 2012, after a tireless campaign, we lost the Castle pub on the same street. That site is largely apartments above a nursery.

The Woodman is an important community space that contributes to reducing loneliness and isolation, and ultimately to improving the mental health of many local people. This petition has the full backing of the London Region of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

How it will be delivered

We will present the petition in hand to Hall and Woodhouse and Wandsworth Council.

*Breaking News*

David and I have some exciting news regarding The Woodman.

The brewery got in touch this morning. They are planning to open the Woodman over the next few weeks – they have a new business partner taking over from Monday 25thSeptember, and their hope is that he will open the doors again within 2 weeks or as soon as he has had the opportunity to get the pub back into shape after the closure.

It is their intention to open the doors in the first instance with as little disruption as possible to the offer as was, and the brewery will be working on a new pub concept / project for them to open with sometime in the new year. We have stressed that it is imperative that the community is fully and meaningfully involved in shaping this for it to be a success. Keep your eye our for opportunities to participate in this.

We very much look forward to celebrating with you all. Your support has helped us to keep the pressure on.

Hello
Another update from us.
Thank you very much for all your support- we have now got over 3000 signatures!
This support helps as we continue to put pressure onto Hall and Woodhouse to reopen the Woodman. A potential business partner has been in contact with us to say he is in discussion with the brewery and if all goes to plan, the Woodman could be open within a month. He is experienced at running pubs so we hope that will help to ensure the longevity of the pub and it does not suffer another closure.
We have stressed to him the importance of the meaningful involvement of the community in shaping the vision and plans for the pub- and that we collectively work towards the success of this amazing community space. Keep an eye out for opportunities to have your say!
We will be in touch with another update soon but in the meantime, let’s keep the momentum up. Please kindly share the petition widely and encourage friends, family and other networks to sign!

Thanks a lot
Polly and David
