Greens for Trans Liberation

The Green Party must refuse platforms such as stalls or fringe sessions at Party events, to any organisation that advocates positions which would undermine trans rights. This is necessary to safeguard members, uphold Party policy, and ensure that harmful messaging is not legitimised through Party events. A recent attempt at Autumn Conference to secure a stall while promoting policies that would restrict trans rights shows why this clarity is urgently needed.
Why is this important?
Trans rights are human rights.
The Green Party has long affirmed that:
- Trans women are women, trans men are men, and non-binary identities exist.
- Everyone deserves dignity, safety, and equality under the law.
- Attempts to roll back or deny trans rights must be opposed
Recently, at Autumn Conference, a group that is campaigning for changes that would undermine trans rights attempted to secure a stall. This is just one example of how groups opposing equality can try to gain legitimacy through political platforms.
Allowing groups that advocate positions which would undermine trans rights to hold stalls or fringe events legitimises harmful messaging, makes people unsafe, and contributes to real harm. It also increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and self-harm among trans and non-binary people.
The Green Party, like all organisations, has a duty of care to prevent foreseeable harm and to uphold equality. By refusing platforms to groups promoting policies that undermine existing protections for trans people, the Party protects its members, makes events safe and welcoming, and shows leadership in defending equality for all.
Trans and non-binary people in the UK experience far higher rates of anxiety, depression and self-harm than the general population. Recent research shows that hostile public debate and anti-trans rhetoric directly worsens mental health:
- A 2025 peer-reviewed study described transphobia in the UK as a public health crisis, linking hostile public narratives to increased social exclusion, violence, and mental health harms (Connolly et al., International Journal for Equity in Health).
- The Centre for Mental Health (2024) warned that transphobia in public debate is putting people’s mental health at risk, with trans people much more likely to experience distress, self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
- The British Psychological Society (2025) found that denying or undermining trans identities (“cis-normativity”) harms people’s core emotional needs for safety, belonging, and recognition.
- The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security has issued a Red Flag Alert on Anti-Trans and Intersex Rights in the UK
Political events must be safe and inclusive. When groups advocating positions that would restrict trans rights are given stalls or platforms, it legitimises harmful messaging and creates foreseeable safeguarding risks.
We ask all who support this cause to sign in solidarity. Political parties and organisations are encouraged not only to sign but to actively demonstrate their commitment to protecting trans rights.
We call on the Green Party to act now: refuse platforms to any organisation that would restrict, remove, or undermine trans rights. Sign now to protect our members and make conferences safe and inclusive for all.
