Stop Anyone Smoking Outside YG Maternity Doors
Patients and visitors continue to smoke outside hospital doors despite the policy of no smoking on hospital grounds and all the signs. No where is this more apparent, and more upsetting than outside the main doors into maternity. People pass through groups of smokers by this door on their way to be checked ante natally, begin labour, visit newborns and poorly babies too. Newborns leaving the wards for the first time wait inside the doors for collection with smoke billowing in, and then have to walk their babies out through the smoke and group of smoking vistors and patients. This petition requests that Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board urgently review this issue across all hospitals and implement more effective strategies for stopping people smoking outside their main doors. Whilst reviewing options and strategies at formal levels (a no doubt lengthy NHS process) this petition requests that Betsi consider implementing immediately for security staff or other appropriate staff to move smokers on periodically during the day, particularly at visiting times, to reduce the second hand smoke residues brought in via visitors to the wards.
Why is this important?
The risks from smoke are already recognised extensively and this is why the policy exists so are unlikely to need listing here. Currently the strategy of having a policy and signs are not effective. I have observed it being an issue over years but was driven to create this petition recently due to attending maternity myself the last few months as an outpatient and then inpatient. Leaving with my new born through a cloud of no fewer than 8 smokers on either side of the door and smoke pouring in whilst I was waiting to leave drove me to take action.
