Stop Bristol's Council Housing Sell-off

The Green-led council need to ditch their policy of selling off council houses, keep all of Bristol's council homes in public ownership, and continue to build new council housing.
They recently published their plans to sell off 1,222 of Bristol’s council homes in a fire sale. Bristol is in the middle of a housing crisis and we have over 22,000 people and families currently waiting for council and social housing locally - this plan is totally unacceptable.

Bristol needs more council homes, not less. We cannot afford to only rely on the private sector to build the homes our city needs.

The Greens are now apparently rowing back on their plans and scaling them down but are yet to completely rule anything out and are refusing to share financial information behind their plans. There have been some positive noises, but we need to keep up the pressure on them to do the right thing.

One council home sold is one too many. Selling them off at auction will mean they end up in the hands of the only people able to pay cash for a home – private landlords. They will charge tenants rents that are unaffordable to most Bristolians.

Green Party councillors have now said that we ‘don’t understand’ council housing. We are council housing tenants, and are shocked by the patronising, condescending statements. People with lived experience understand their situation the best and their voices should be at the forefront of any discussions about the matters that affect them.

We have been on the council housing waiting list, we have waited far too long for the council to carry out repairs, and we know the value a secure roof over your head has for Bristol’s working-class communities. Sadly, the Greens fail to recognise this.

Sign our petition to let the Greens know that Bristol doesn’t support their council housing sell-off.

Why is this important?

Bristol has over 22,000 households on the social housing waiting list. Selling existing ones and not building the new council housing Bristol needs will only mean the waiting list bigger and have people waiting for longer. We are in a housing crisis – the council needs to act like it.
By law, the council can only invest council tenants’ rent into improving our homes or building new ones. Selling council housing and refusing to build the council homes Bristol needs means less money for repairs and improvements, more people on the housing waiting list waiting for longer, and higher temporary accommodation bills for the taxpayer.
