Stop Channel 4 dating show 'The Undateables'
Withdraw the dating show 'The Undateables' from air or change the name, as some disabled people find it offensive.
Why is this important?
I have cerebral palsy myself and am fortunate enough to lead a fairly normal life. My self-confidence is not often negatively affected by my disability, despite the media often portraying disability as ugly, undesirable and unattractive. However, it's hardly surprising that a lot of disabled people have issues with their self-esteem when programmes like 'The Undateables' exist.
For anyone not familiar with this show or who hasn't seen the adverts for it, it effectively seems to be a dating show for people with mental and physical disabilities.
While this may seem like a nice and inclusive idea, the subtext to this seems to me to be that disabled people could only ever find love with other disabled people, and only a disabled person could ever find another disabled person attractive.
It seems ridiculous to me that a show of this nature, with a name like the Undateables can be broadcast without any backlash.
