Stop evictions so landlords cannot then rent to councils at a higher rate
Since the housing benefit rent caps were introduced, private landlords are now evicting tenants for no particular reason except that they can then rent their properties to councils and housing associations, and charge them more for the rents. The councils then rent out at a lesser rent than they are paying for the same properties.
Why is this important?
Private landlords are using this system to get around the housing benefit caps. It puts more pressure on councils and housing associations to supply decent accommodation to the most vulnerable people, when they do not have the resources to do so.
The government should now step in and stop this happening. They introduced the housing benefit caps, but the system is flawed. They should ensure that councils themselves should not have to pay more than the benefit caps.
